Recover Piano Bench Tutorial

One of our great blessings is that we inherited this piano from my in-laws. I don't play, but T does, and I intend to make my kids play. However, I don't really love the color of the piano (sort of orange-ish brown) and I don't really love the cover. See below.

So, I decided to recover it. Just in case it's the last cross-stitch Aunt Edna ever did, I just put fabric over the whole thing. Plus, it was easier that way.

Tools needed:

Hammer

Upholstery nails (bought mine at JoAnn)

1/2 yard of fabric you like

Screwdriver to remove the seat from the bench.

Time needed:

Less than an hour, unless you're doing it in the middle of the day with 3 kids who need lunch, carpooled to school, taken for a walk, and put down for a nap. Then, plan on 4 hours.

Step One: Remove the seat from the bench. Lay it out on your fabric upside down. Trim fabric down.

Step Two: Bring fabric up over the edge and nail it down. I spaced my nails about 3 inches apart to try to keep the fabric nice and tight. Try not to hammer your finger, as mine is still throbbing two hours later.

The corners are a little tricky. I saved the corners for last and used two nails in each. Then I trimmed the excess fabric and re-attached the seat to the bench.

All done! It was easy, but goes a long way to help the piano look better in our home. Fabric can do amazing things!
